What is required to be able to connect to a 5G network

A customer needs to have a 5G capable mobile phone that is compatible with Dialog's 5G network and a 4G compatible SIM (USIM), whilst also being within one of the 5G trial coverage areas. If a customer is using an old SIM which does not support 4G, it then it needs to be upgraded.

How can we experience 5G?

If you already have a 5G device (matching the compatible list given below) you can trial the network compatibility yourself. Devices have been set up at the Dialog Customer Care Centres below as well, allowing you to walk in and try it out.

  • The Dialog Iconic
  • Dialog Experience Centre at Alfred House
  • Dialog Experience Centre at World Trade Center

Where is the 5G coverage available?

Coverage has been initially launched in selected areas. We are expanding the coverage to several other main cities during next phase.

  • Thurston
  • Thummulla
  • Queen’s road
  • Galadari
  • Liberty plaza
  • Union Place
  • World Trade Center

What are the charges for the 5G network?

Data consumed while on 5G will be free during the trial period. However, if the device moves to a 4G coverage area while on the data session, the quota used on 4G will be charged as per the normal tariff rates applicable to the connection.

How do you get the 5G network activated on your mobile?

We have already activated 5G on identified customer devices which have 5G compatibility at the time of launch of the 5G network. These customers have received an SMS informing them of the trial service activation. However, if you have connected the device to the 5G network recently, you can request for the service to be activated via the web portal by selecting your device model and entering your mobile number. Our technical teams will validate the devices compatibility and activate the service within 72 hours.

Why is the service provided free of charge?

5G is currently launched using a trial frequency that has been allocated by The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka ( TRCSL.) The objective of this launch is to allow Sri Lankans to experience 5G. Therefore, the service is currently offered free of charge.

I have enabled 5G under network settings but my phone doesn’t attach to a 5G network even though I’m in the trial 5G network coverage area.

Although the phone’s hardware is capable of supporting 5G, the 5G functionality in firmware is not enabled for Sri Lankan operators in phones brought from other regions.

Can there be an impact on my other services when the 5G trial is activated?

5G is an additional service activated on top of the existing services.

Dialog has tested the functionality of 5G against most of the commonly used services without any disturbance observed, but this does not completely eliminate the possibility of some services not functioning while in the coverage areas.
